CHAPTER FIFTEEN
SYLVIE ADDISON
Iwas a terrible mother. All right, maybe not the absolute worst, but if you listened to my daughter, youâd think I deserved an award. I knew Piper wanted me out of the house and out of her life even though she never said it. One thing about my girl was she was always easy to read, what with her expressive face and even more expressive mouth. Mom said she took after me in that way, but heaven forbid Piper ever admit we were anything alike.
Jokeâs on herâ stubbornness was another thing we had in common.
I watched anxiety pour off her as she came through the door, my heart sinking at the thought of having caused it. Sure, I didnât kill poor Reeba, but my presence in Orchard Hollow was taking a toll on Piper and I felt terrible for intruding on her life. As much as I hated to admit it, Piper and I were nothing more than strangers now. Mostly because of my own actions.
I wished there was a way to make her understand why I had to leave, why it was the only way to protect her from those vicious, bloodthirsty witches. And from him.
Sheâd never buy it.
Keeping her in the forefront of my mind, I told Piper I was stepping out for a wild night in town so she could have some space for herself and the privacy she desperately craved. Sheâd likely spend it chatting up the handsome vampire, my opinion of whom had not yet been fully formed. Regardless, she needed time alone, and I had a lead to follow.
Taking a final glance at my beautiful daughter, I zipped up Momâs old faux-fur jacket Iâd found in the attic and stepped outside. The wind was furious this time of year and the trees surrounding our slice of heaven had already shed their leaves. Their corpses taunted me as I made the brisk walk down the driveway to meet the taxi driver. Settling into the leather seats, I let my head loll to the side, a much needed catnap taking control of my tired body.
I awoke with a start, the taxi stopping in a familiar part of town. Paying the man with the last of my petty cash, I stepped out and inhaled the cold night air. My lungs froze taking it in, but I stood steady, knowing that once I leave, I would miss this part of Orchard Hollow. Despite what Piper thought, Iâd actually liked it here once upon a time.
My eyes drifted to the piece of paper in my hands. âPrudeâ¦â I whispered into the busy parking lot of the Cliffside Diner. The name sounded familiar, but I couldnât quite place it. Still, it drew me in and I felt I needed to investigate further, if only to give my daughter a break.
While Piper was busy tearing apart Reebaâs life to find a lead, I knew better. The Sisters killed my friend; there was no doubt in my mind about it.
